Constructed in 1910 by The Catholic Diocese of Little Rock under the direction of Bishop John Baptist Morris, St. Joseph's Orphanage grew to house and school around 300 children by 1914. St. Joseph's Orphanage was managed by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith who taught and oversaw the children as well as maintained the surrounding vast farm and its animals.
